A Moneta in San Francisco

When I wrote about my first version of Moneta I didn't realize that it was my new favorite dress pattern. After making the dress a second time it all became very clear, it's official: I'm in love.

My Pucci inspired Moneta was technically a wearable muslin and when it was done I knew that it needed a few tweaks for it to fit the way I wanted. For round two I took in the center neckline by 1/4 inch, shortened the bodice by 1 inch, and added 2 inches to the length. My twin needle even played nice for me and didn't have much tunneling :)

This probably isn't the most exciting make for you guys, but I assure you that it will get a lot of wear. Every girl needs a black jersey dress right? Oooh, I wonder if I should stop referring to myself as a girl, I'm turning 30 this Friday. Is it time to start calling myself a "lady" now?

Back to the dress, I am really into wearing all black again. Throughout my life I go through phases of wearing all black just because I think it is a classy look, not to make any particular statement. For whatever reason it really bothers some people to the point that they have to comment on it. Like, really bothers. Why just a few weeks ago I was called "gothic," but the most memorable comment was from a former dorm mate in college. She said, "I can tell by the way you dress and what music you listen to that you do drugs." L...O...L. Does anyone else get hated on for wearing all black or is it just me?

These photos were taken at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco this weekend. I'm afraid that I don't know a thing about it, it was across the street from the hotel we stayed at and I thought it would be a cool spot for photos. In my next post I'm going to share some photos of the fabric stores I went to :) And surprise surprise, I got fabric for another Moneta.

Happy Wednesday!

  1. Yay for new favourites!
That ex-dorm-mate sounds like her biggest problem is herself. I love your attitude & I'm glad you didn't let her ignorant judging get to you :-) My randomly chosen first year flatmate was up to something and the white powder on the table was a somewhat more obvious sign. Incidentally he played awesome Spanish guitar.

  2. Oh man, that does not sound like the best flatmate!

At the time when my dorm mate said that I was kind of hurt because it sucks when people judge you, but now I laugh so hard over it. Who says that kind of stuff anyways???!?!

  3. Yeah - weird enough just thinking that let alone saying it!

  4. Ugh. I'm sorry I missed you. I've been behind in reading my blog subscription so only learned about the trip after you were already here and gone. Boo!

Looks like you had a great time! I rarely go fabric shopping in the city. Can't wait to see how your experience went.

  5. Cute dress! Black knit dresses are a great staple. I've got a RTW one that I wear all the time. I don't get why some people are so bothered by all black, I agree it looks classy and it's easy to wear.
    Happy early birthday, btw!!

  6. I love moneta too! Well, my moneta/renfrew hybrid. I want more, and a black dress? Not boring at all. I think it would be a perfect gap-filler in my wardrobe :) yours looks great! I bet you'll wear it so much!

  7. This made me laugh because I used to wear black all the time when I was a teenager, partly because I wanted to look like Lydia from Beetlejuice, and partly because I'd heard black was slimming and I was unhealthily obsessed with my weight at that time. My mother was so worried that my wearing black constantly was a sign of something horrible, though she never quite managed to explain what. I agree with Sarah - when people get that upset about inconsequential things others are doing, their biggest problem is themselves.

  8. Love it! I don't wear black much, I'm more of a bright colors person! But, I do think that all black is super classy, not goth-y at all, especially when it's a cute dress like this :)

  9. Love it! People can be so weird and judge-y sometimes, eh? Also: Happy Birthday!!!:)

  10. People can be so weird about clothes... I was a very shy teen so I tried to stay unnoticed and mostly wore jeans and t-shirts... Then one of my classmates asks me if I'm 'punk'. Huh.

  11. It looks fab and I can imagine a comfy dress would be needed in SF with all that hill walking to contend with. One of my favourite cities to explore.

  12. you can call yourself whatever you want! i'd call you a dame.

i've been considering a black easy chic dress too... you're pushing me over the edge...

  14. Those comments are so bizarre! This dress is great, you really can't go wrong with a simple dress to wear all the time!

  15. Man, what's wrong with wearing black? Mean people suck! I love a black dress, especially the moneta. You can do so much to dress it up or down.

  16. I think black looks super chic too, and this dress it a perfect wardrobe basic. It's amazing the comments people come up with isn't it? And the nerve to actually say them to you. I would love to wear all black, but with 3 pugs it's just not practical unless I am going to be out of the house all day! I think your Moneta looks great! Will you make more?

  17. you look darling in your dress--not at all like a drug user! LOL I think the pet hair is a huge deterrent to me wearing more black; prints and color just hide all the Lucy and Jay hair so much better :) Happy birthday tomorrow--welcome to the 30's club!

  18. I think you look very chic in your nice black dress. I turned 30 a few months ago, and I'm still going with girl for the time being...

  19. Ha - my husband wears all black, and who KNOWS that his highschool colleagues think of him... add in muttonchops, a bald head, and a passion for improv and comic books, and I'm pretty sure he confounds them all! ;) Makes him easy to describe him to someone though! "You know, the big bald guy who only wears black!" You look GREAT in black, and it goes so well with leopard! Keep rocking it!

  20. Love your dress, I think it's very classy, and it looks great on you. Re the stupid comment, some people really do need a filter surgically attached to their mouth! I find looking at Idiot in utter disbelief and saying, "you are aware that you just said that out loud?" usually does the trick! Happy birthday! 😉

  21. You, my darling, look gorgeous! Every girl / lady needs a black jersey dress and yours is perfect! Happy early birthday!! I'm 40 and still call myself a girl, so do it! xo

OMG! WTF stupid comments?! Jeez! Some people really, really need manners! I second Ozzy's comment: 'Are you aware that you just said that out loud?!' Hah!

  22. Haha people are so weird!! Soooooo nuns wear black... they must be gothic, emo, and/or do drugs, right?! Wow. Seriously, who says that lol. I think your dress is beautiful and it looks fantastic on you. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BTW ...Lady ;)

  23. All black all the time? You'd fit in so well in NYC! Perhaps you and your Moneta should come visit us out on the east coast!!

  24. I love all black and quite regularly go through phases of wearing it. In fact that is exactly what I am wearing now!!! I have a black Moneta style (hacked Skater) planned now actually. Seems like the perfect go to dress. Works for any occasion and can be dressed up or down - perfect :)

  25. Lovely staple dress that you will wear all the time! I like black too. I find it flattering. I used to be a bit of a goth. It's weird when people tell you that you dress like you're moody and scary. It's like, haven't you worked out you can talk to people and learn what they're actually like?! Anyway, cracking dress

  26. That looks fabulous and I looove a dress with pockets.

  27. This looks so great! I used to get lots of shit for wearing black in my high school years (I was a bit of a rocker back then). I was an A student and an artsy geek, but everyone thought I was a party animal ad a troublemaker because I wore black! Such a weird assumption! But Jennifer's right- you look like a normal New Yorker!

  28. Nuns wear black, LOLOLOLOLOLOL!

  34. If jeans and t-shirts are "punk" then I am for sure a punk! haha

  35. Oh man, those hills! We walked a 1/2 mile uphill and I got a serious leg workout in. Those hills are steep!
