Meet up with Jill from The Sew Alongs

Jill contacted me a month ago and asked if we could meet up while she was in town. I was super pumped because I had always liked Jill's blog, so why wouldn't I like Jill? We agreed to meet at Splash Cafe, a local restaurant in Pismo Beach that is well known for it's amazing clam chowder.

Jill was as awesome as I thought she would be! I just knew when she ordered the seafood topping (a mix of shrimp and crab) on top of her chowder that we were meant to be buds ;) It was so nice to talk to someone with the same interests and enjoy warm food on a cold rainy day. We were there for two hours talking and laughing. Thanks for hanging with me, Jill! I had a blast and can't wait to have a sew day together in the future.

Something we talked about was explaining to friends who you were meeting up with when you haven't officially met before. Do you find that people judge you/act weird when you say you are going to hang out with a sewing blogger that you haven't met in "real life?" I don't think it's weird at all (obviously) and my husband doesn't bat an eye when Rochelle and I are texting or when I meet up with a blogger. When I have told some acquaintances that I was going to meet up with a sewing buddy I met through blogging, some will ask, "but, how do you know each other?" and get confused.

How have people in your lives responded to your meetups?

  1. Sometimes, when I talk about 'knowing' someone from blogging, my friends look at me like I'm strange. I think the whole sewing blogging thing is confusing to the non-sewers, and they don't realize how interactive it is. :)

  2. Some friends thought I was off to get murdered when i said I was meeting bloggers aka "strangers off the internet" in Birmingham. What? All 16 of them are psychos inviting me fabric shopping before they plan to kill me?! Nonsense.

  3. I met up with some bloggers in NYC and my IRL friends thought that was a little weird, but then they don't understand why I sew either. BTW am coming over your way in May next year!

  4. I just went to my first sewing blogger meetup on Saturday (it was awesome!) and a friend of mine was surprised to hear there were enough of us out there to even have one. Haha!

  5. I get quite a different reaction from my friends and family- they all know me as quite quiet & reserved so I think most of them are pretty proud of me & also really interested when I tell them about meet-ups and the blogging community in general

  6. I've never met up with a fellow sewing blogger and I'm jealous of all you ladies who find yourselves in the same cities who do! If the opportunity arose, though, I'd probably never tell my friends what I was doing because yeah, they'd think it was weird! :)

  7. How fun! I love Jill's blog, too! People always think it's strange when they hear about meet-ups.

  8. How cool! Lol, someone said to me they'd "have to be drunk" to meet strangers like that. But when you have a hobby in common, it's not awkward at all :)

  9. That was so much fun! Thanks again for meeting up with me :) We were there for 2 hours, huh? Wow. Yeah, it was funny telling my co-workers that I was meeting a sewing friend that I'd didn't know in person. Most of them know I knit and sew, but they still look at me sideways for the blog friends thing. Whateverrrr! My husband thinks it's rad, though :)
BTW, I told everyone that would listen about that clam chowder! I wish I had some right now!! SO good!
