Renfrew #2

I finally finished a sewing project! I think I have been in a sewing rut over the last month and I'm not sure why. There has been a definite lack of motivation when it comes to my two unfinished quilts and to the Tafffy blouse I am working on :(

This is my second Renfrew top and I truly love this pattern. It's just so easy, like "beginner like me easy." The only issue I had is with the collar, it looks baggy. This is probably due to my fabric choice, no fault to the pattern! Instead of a stable knit I used a lightweight jersey. The shirt feels so good on though, that despite the imperfect collar I am going to wear it. I realized that no one is going to notice the collar unless I point it out or they sew too. Hopefully I won't run into any of you while I am wearing this ;) Kidding! But, that made me think about you guys and what you do when you make something that you aren't 100% satisfied with. Do you scrap it? Wear it proudly? Fix it if you can? I'm curious!

Oh, and sorry for the low quality photo. I dragged Luke outside with my camera, but the battery died before he could even take a picture. I settled for an Instagram photo from my phone instead.

Check off one project for the spring color palette challenge!

  1. I love that color on you! I'm working on mine now. Here's hoping I don't get too frazzled using the jersey.

I really try to fix things if I can figure out how. Otherwise I'll wear it with something else that can possible hide the flaws, like a second layer.

  2. As long as I can fix things, I tend to. A lot of the sewing I do for myself tends to be occasion-based, though--I'll be making a dress or outfit for a certain party/holiday/concert. So "fixing" tends to mean "fixing, to the best of my ability within the limited time I have, to the extent that I can wear it through tomorrow evening/Christmas dinner/two openers and an extended set." Both because this isn't always the same as "permanently fixing for lasting effect" and because occasion-based clothes don't always wardrobize well, a lot of my stuff ends up serving its purpose and then getting remade. I'd say I have maybe three dresses right now that are still in their originally intended/sewn form...

  3. I love the color you chose, very spring time, which I'm sure is why you chose it!
As far as fixing...if it doesn't bother me, and it's not a special occasion make, I'll wear it for a while. Then I might go back and fix it. Usually, I just can't be bothered right after finishing, cause I want to keep moving on!

  4. Renfrew really is a great pattern. I'd actually say the baggy collar looks a little design feature in the picture. It might be different in person, but I like it. It's like a little more texture to draw your eye around there.

I have a bit of reverse magic closet. I love what I make the first few times I wear it. I have shirts I made before I discovered the wonders of a FBA and I don't wear them any more. I can't quite part with them, I can't add more fabric in to really fix it, but when I put them on I tug and I pull so it's not right.

  5. That is a pretty top on you! Coral is one of my fave colors and now that I am grey, it still works when I am tan. You could "fix" the neck binding by using embroidery floss and spiraling over and over on the neckline to give it a twisted look.

  6. Oh i totally hear ya... I keep looking at Taffy - a project that could/should have been made in two days tops, and turning my nose up at her for some reason LOL - love the Renfrew; the colour is so fresh and pretty - perfect for spring :) Thanks for the tip on the fabric; I was gonna do one in jersey too - but I think I still might cause I think your collar looks 'on purpose' if you know what i mean :)

  7. Yay Renfrew. I have to make another one too :) I have heard that if you use a stretchier knit than called for, you should cut an inch or two out of the length of the neckband.

Stretch it to fit as you sew, and it's supposed to make it lie nice and flat. Hope this helps!
Hey, you can even try to reattach it perhaps! However, like others, I think it looks fine :)

I have something I recently made which could be fixed, but it would be a tonne of work. I'm still not sure if I'll fix it or not. Boo!

  9. I love this top pattern! Totally my style. I would love to have it in long sleeve too. :) It looks so comfortable and stylish on you! I think it looks perfect and I say you should wear it proud.

  10. I have a renfrew with a funky collar (I'm not saying yours is funky, I can't even see it that well on the screen I'm using because I can't blow it up) that I wear to the gym. I like that it's getting use but I don't worry about the funkiness when I'm just at the gym- plus I figure no one else is either!

  11. Eek, you look so cute in that pink! Really nice! I usually try to fix issues or else I feel weird and vaguely annoyed whenever I wear the stuff. I feel like, with a stretchier, flimsier jersey, you should shorten the neckband piece so it's stretched more and can't be as floppy.
