Luke Haynes

My finished (untrimmed) block.

Let's try to ignore the fact that I haven't blogged in almost two months and that I have been terrible about updating you guys on my monthly goals. Despite my lack of posting I have been pretty good about completing my to do list, with the exception of last month. And even though it's the beginning of May, I'm going to say the next twenty seven days might not be a goal crushing month for me either :/ Hopefully, I will be able to tell you guys about what's been going on in my life soon! :)

On to my awesome weekend! The ladies at Picking Daisies, a local fabric shop in San Luis Obispo, posted a few days ago that Luke Haynes was going to be in SLO teaching a class in their shop. Ummmm, what?!?! For those of you who don't know, Luke is an extremely talented quilter (check out some of his work here) and an all around cool dude. I reached out to the owners of Picking Daisies to see if I could get in the class, but it was full, with a wait list! Bummer.

Since I couldn't get into the class I asked Luke if he wanted to meet up and hang out. We ended up eating in Avila Beach with Dora. It was my first time meeting both of them and it was way fun! I knew that Luke and I were meant to be friends when we ordered the same lunch and each put vinegar on our fries :P

So, the cool part of my weekend was when Kay and Dee Dee from Picking Daisies let me know that there was a spot in Luke's class if I wanted it. Hell yeah, I wanted it! I had no idea what I'd be learning in the class, but I was 100% stoked on going. The class was on Sunday from 9:00 - 5:00 with an hour lunch break. It was my first time sewing/quilting for such a long amount of time, but the day flew by so quick!

My fabrics for the class: Cotton and Steel, Cotton and Steel, and Alison Glass.

Luke taught us how to make a Log Condo quilt block (a modified log cabin) using his method, which was genius. I love the look of the finished block so much and enjoyed the process of sewing it. There was practically no pressing involved, which took a minute to get used to, very little pinning, and a LOT of cutting going on. First we cut the fabric into strips of different sizes and shapes,  "made" our own fabric by combining two different fabrics (dark with bright and light with bright), and then cut the "new" fabric into strips for the log cabin. Chain piecing made the block construction a lot faster!

One of Luke's amazing quilts.

Check out that quilting!

Snacks on snacks.

I learned a ton, had a blast, and made some new friends too! If you ever have the opportunity to take a class from Luke, DO IT! You will not be disappointed and will gain some valuable quilting knowledge, guaranteed. And if you live near me I'd recommend taking a class at Picking Daisies. The ladies there know how to do it up for a long sew day! The sewing area was set up nicely with room for cutting and ironing, we had an amazing lunch from Mama's Meatball, and the best homemade cookies. Plus, Dee Dee and Kay also carry indie sewing patterns and plan on buying more, so you locals should check them out!

You guys, what is going on? Am I becoming a quilter?!?!?

  1. Yes, welcome to the world of quilting, it just compliments your sewing. I would love to take a class with Luke. He spoke at our guild last year, just before he really burst out onto the quilt- art scene.

  2. Cute quilt block Erin! There is nothing wrong with a bit of quilting. Sometimes it's nice to make something that doesn't need fitting.
It's really fun to meet people who you admire and how great that you got a spot in the class anyway :)

  3. This sounds like such a fun day, and what a great opportunity to meet Luke! This block looks really unique and interesting. I never would have thought to piece the fabric and THEN assemble it into a log cabin. What a cool idea!

  4. I never would have thought to do it that way either, but it is so clever. It made some nice variations in the fabric.

  5. I agree, it is really nice making something that doesn't need to fit :P

It was so cool that I made it into the class!!!! I was having a bad day and even left work early because of it (which I never do), but when I got the e-mail letting me know that I could take the class it completely turned my day around!

  6. I'm so jealous that he was at your guild and that you got to see all his quilts! He spoke last night in Paso Robles at the guild there, but I couldn't make it because I ran too late at work :(
