1940s on the brain

I'm super excited about Rochelle's 1940s sewing challenge. Have you heard about it? Everyone is sewing a 1940s inspired outfit and debuting them at the end of March. This is definitely a challenge for me because I don't know a thing about 1940s fashion.

My talented hairstylist friend, MaryBeth, asked me to take part in a photoshoot this upcoming weekend for her portfolio. Coincidentally, she decided to do my hair like the photo above which has a 40s feel to it. She said that I can wear whatever I want and ideally I would like to make something, I'm just not sure if I will have time :(!!!

After seeing Rochelle's cute version and Tasha's adorable pair I decided to also try out Simplicity 3688. This past Sunday was spent cutting out the fabric and sewing, so hopefully I will have them finished within the next couple of days. PANTS! I can't believe I am sewing pants!

To go with the pants I obviously need something on top, so what about Simplicity 1692? Specifically view D. I'm not sure if I should use the red flower fabric (could it even be considered 40s?) or if I should make the top exactly like the one on the envelope (white with red details) because it is so cute!

OR do I sew up the Ceylon pattern? It has a 40s feel to it and I have some fabrics that (I think) are inspired by that time frame.

If I sew Ceylon it won't be done by the photo shoot this weekend. I could have the pants and a top done by the weekend if I pushed myself, but do I really want to stress myself out and do angry sewing? When I think about the perk of professional hair, makeup, and photography it's very tempting...

  1. I just picked up that Simplicity blouse pattern when Joann had the 5 for $5 sale. I love the white with red detail and was considering copying it exactly as well! I've had Simplicity 3688 for ages but I have yet to cut into it. I'm excited to see what you wear for the shoot!

  2. I love the Ceylon! It will definitely have to wait for after the shoot though. :( If you already have a 40's-ish top, you could always go for the pants and wear the old top if you run out of time, or vice versa if you already have a 40's-ish bottom.

But the Ceylon is my first choice for the sewing challenge if the photoshoot was not involved. I wish I could participate, but I'm just too intimidated by vintage patterns still. :)

  3. I reckon for the photo shoot you should go with the white and red top just like it is on the pattern envelope - it'll look so cute with the trousers... And then you can make up the Ceylon for the Sew for Victory deadline at the end of March. Win win!

  4. go Erin! what color are the pants?

  5. If you cut out all your pattern pieces one day, and then give yourself another two days to sew the pants and shirt, I'm confident you could have it done by this weekend! But yeah, angry sewing is bad. So don't stress! If the photo shoot is going to revolve around your hair style, your top is probably more important to focus on (assuming the shoot will be mostly head shots). Whatever you make will be amazing :)

  6. Oooh, that would be so much fun to do a photo shoot! I say try to make the pants and top, and if you don't, don't stress! But if you do make the separates, you can still make a Ceylon too afterwards!

  7. I love the red floral fabric for the blouse! It's so pretty and you always look lovely in red. Those trousers are so comfy and look great :)

  8. The blouse and pants would make such a lovely combo...and you could wear them separately too. Bonus! Simplicity 1692 reminds me a lot of the Colette Sencha.
I can't wait to see how your Simplicity 3688 pants turn out! There pretty popular in the sewing blogasphere.

  9. The pants are so easy to sew you could get them done in a day. I have that shirt pattern too that I'm getting ready to make up. OMG are we reading each others minds or what? I really like the red floral fabric you have for the shirt. Where did you get it!?!?!

  10. I love the fabric options you have! I think you could totally save Ceylon for a later date. I love the red print you are considering for the blouse (and do think it would be 40s appropriate for sure) but I agree a white one with the red trim would be great too. But would a white shirt not be great for photos? I don't know, but I recall when a friend was going to be filmed for tv they told her not to wear a white shirt. lol

  13. You should make it too and we can be twinnies :)

  14. Diane, you should try Ceylon! It's not a vintage pattern and I've found that Colette Patterns are really easy to follow. I rarely get confused when I am reading their directions and I'm not a sewing pro by any means!

  21. That's because we are twinnies!!! I got the red floral fabric at a local quilt shop. I'll look at it when I get home and let you know who the designer is.
