Edie Sedgwick

I've been kind of bummed out on sewing lately due to a couple of failed projects (more on that later), so I thought I would share a little about someone who inspired my latest dress, Edie Sedgwick. I've been influenced by her style in 2013, she inspired John Galliano's collection for Dior in 2005, and was the muse to not only Andy Warhol, but also Bob Dylan, in the 1960s. FYI I'm not putting myself on same pedestal as Galliano, Warhol, and Dylan. Just saying her impact has spanned decades! ;)

Reading biographies is one of my favorite things to do. I love reading about the personal and professional lives of people, especially Old Hollywood stars. Technically, Edie doesn't fit into the Old Hollywood category, but a friend let me borrow Edie American Girl and I was intrigued the moment I started reading. Of course after reading it I re-watched Factory Girl, a movie about Edie's life in New York. Sienna Miller played Edie and did a fantastic job, I have trouble telling the two of them apart when I see photos!

Edie was from Santa Barbara, California (a couple of hours away from me!) and moved to New York in the sixties where she met Andy Warhol and became his muse. If you know anything about her then you know she was a tortured soul and some of you may be wondering why I am so fascinated by her. I'm can't pinpoint why I'm drawn to her, but I do admire her fashion choices and she was the inspiration behind my last sewing project. I chose that particular fabric to go with the pattern because I thought it was something that Edie would possibly wear.

Doesn't Sienna Miller look just like Edie? source

I plan on making some more Edie inspired clothing in the future. I have the black tights and (faux) fur, but would like to make some boatneck striped shirts. Does anyone know of a good pattern that they would recommend?

Are there any other fellow Edie fans out there?

  4. I'm a fan, too. I didn't know much about her until I actually watched factory girl a couple of years ago. That film was also the film that made me like Sienna as an actress.
Edie's style is very inspiring. Every now and then I get into wearing 1960s styles and wish I could pull off that make up!!! I can't wait to see your sewing projects inspired by her.

    1. I loveeeee her makeup! I also wish I could pull it off, but if I started doing my eyes as dark as hers I'd get some weird looks at work. Oh well, maybe it can be a weekend thing.

  7. i like her too. i love the csogn by the Cult "edie (ciao baby)" too. i love a 1960s look and she is so iconic. i really like maria denmark's kimono tee pattern for a boatneck tee (and it's a free download and very quick to sew up, so winner all round!)

  11. I used to have a serious Edie fascination a few years ago! She still is up there for me as a fashion inspiration. Yes, definitely a tragic soul - but there's definitely something about her look and image which really stands the test of time. Maybe that's why I LOVED your last make SO FREAKING HARD!!! You were channeling Edie!

  12. I just hate how she died too much to love her. So many lovely lights ruined by people who were careless. Poor Edie. She was so lovely and just so cool!

  13. I love her style, too! She had such a youthful, unique vibe. I'm with Sallie-- I extra-loved your last dress, too, probably because you were channeling her!

  15. I'm reading this post super late-- but you should definitely look up some pictures of Ruby Jean Wilson modelling in S/S 2013. She's got a fanatasic blonde bob and an amazing scowl. Splitting image of Edie.

  16. This is a bit late, but I also LOVE Edie. I too have a bit of an obsession. Edie: Girl on Fire is also a good book. It's a lot of pictures, and I think some of the text is lifted from the Jean Stein book, but I still like it. It came with a cd with recordings of her talking, too. Listening to her always makes me a bit sad. Have you watched Ciao Manhattan? It's a little disturbing to see how messed up she was, at such a young age. The Andy Warhol Diaries has some bits about Edie in it, too. Oh, and watch the movie Pie in the Sky, if you are at all interested in other Factory people. It's all about Brigid Berlin. She seems like a lot of fun.
