Jinx

Do you ever jinx yourself when you are sewing? I do all the time! Last night I was working on my muslin for the Truffle dress and I thought to myself, "I can finish this tonight. All I have to do is put in the zipper, sew up the sides, and hem the bottom. Easy." That was when it all went wrong.

I don't think I pressed the zipper open enough with the iron which was the problem. When I was sewing the needle kept going through the actual zipper part (yes, I was using an invisible zipper foot) which is a nightmare when you are trying to zip it up. I pulled the tab so hard that the zipper left a gap between some of the teeth. Luke tried to fix it and pulled the whole tab off. Like I said, "NIGHTMARE." So, I had to take the zipper out and in the end wasted one hour of my time and didn't make any progress.

Have any of you done this before? I'm going to have to be more careful when I'm sewing!

  2. Um, yes. My slip fiasco the other day. Exact same words: oh, this will be easy. Hahahaha!

Your truffle fabric is really cute, though, can't wait to see that finished up!

  3. You wouldn't believe how many times I've done that! I no longer think "I'll just quickly put this zipper in" because as soon as I do it turns into a long drawn out process with multiple unpicking, lots of swearing and the occasional hole ripped in fabric (that's what happens if you ignore the fact that some stitches are on the wrong side of the teeth and attempt to pull the zipper up anyway)!

  4. as soon as I think I can "hurry and finish this right now" I run into problems. I've given up the idea of rushing to finish--it never ends well. Instead I work on the task at hand and try to be content to finish when there is time to finish, and not a second before ;) sorry you had zipper trouble. it's not fun to have to seam rip and redo parts! this is the muslin? and the animal print fabric is for the final garment?? I can't wait to see the finished dress. good luck!

  7. This is so me. I should know better. I should stop when its late and I'm tired. While I've yet to jack up a zipper, I have sewn pockets to the wrong side of dresses. I've sewn those same pockets upside down. I decided the dress didn't need pockets.

  8. Oh, lady! You made the fatal mistake! This is always the way and I've come to a point when I find myself saying this it is time to step away from the machine and pour myself a cocktail!

  9. What a bummer. It's so hard to walk away from a project when you are so close. Often times I'm tired and that's when the mistakes occur. Luckily it's an easy fix: new zip! Good luck!

I am so behind in the sew-along. I am a bit nervous about fitting the dresses. Hoping to tackle them both, Truffle and Pastille, soon.

  10. I'm sorry, but also have to say: I'm glad I'm not the only one. Yesterday I did the exact same thing with a zipper pull. sigh.

  11. Oh yes I've been there. I've sewn too close to the teeth making it impossible to zip. I have had the thought of "oh.. it's only x, y and z, I can get that done" only to realize at 2am not only did I do z wrong but neither x nor y are looking all that good...
I have also returned to projects to think, seriously, that's *all* that was left? And you walked away for how long?

  12. Oh no!!! But I can relate... every time I'm like "I am sooo going to finish this in ONE hour!" it turns into a botch and lots of swearing under breath or simply sighing and resigning myself to going to the store, unpicking, whatever time suck. I've learned to move on if I get tired or stressed or add unnecessary pressure :)

  13. I hate it when something like that happens. My problem is usually buttonholes though, not zippers. I find for me its best to just focus on one thing at a time, and walk away when I am tired. Your muslin looks great!
