My "Pastille" dress

Two words: wrinkle city

My dress is finally finished and I am wearing it as I type. I finished sewing last night (I'm such a procrastinator) and planned on having my husband take photos of me before going to work. Well, he got called on an emergency job and had to leave the house at 7:00 am. I decided to wear my dress to work and take pictures here. It's pretty weird wearing something so dressy to work, but I am justifying it because I have a work meeting later on.

Here's the lowdown on the dress: I'm not really sure if I like it :( The facings show through because the fabric is somewhat sheer (that's what I get for ordering offline and not seeing it in person) and it wrinkles like crazy!!!! I tried ironing it, steaming it, even starching it and it wrinkles so bad! In the first photo I had only been wearing the dress for a little over two hours and it looks terrible.

I tried to make myself feel better about my failed fabric choice by playing dress up with some of the stuff in my closet.

If you have been following along with the sew-along, then you will notice that my dress is as simple as it comes. I didn't do the pleats on the bottom or the bow on the top. I would like to make this dress again in the future, but with a different fabric that doesn't wrinkle so badly. The fit is not perfect, but I learned a lot about fitting modifications, so I can't complain :)

I'm going to wait a bit so all of you can upload pictures of your finished dresses to the Sew Colette Flickr group before I do a round up of some of my favorites. I can't wait to see them! :)

  1. Wow, great effort.. and yeah it's a bummer when stuff you make doesn't quite live up to the expectations, but you are so right to focus on all the good stuff you've learnt! :)
And your next Pastille will be easy peasy for you :)

    1. I want to make it again in another fabric, so hopefully it will go smoothly!

  2. Aw, gee: that's exactly how I feel about my Pastille, from the imperfect fit to the accidentally-weird fabric choice to last-minute photos! But we're learning, and that's the important part: each project gets a little bit better. Good job persevering, and cute dress anyway!

  3. the dress looks super cute on you Erin, good job! Too bad about the fabric tho :( I never wear my Sencha blouse for the same reason--the facings show through. I'm trying to think of how to alter it into something else... It's silk, and I hate to call it a loss. But every project is a great learning experience!!

  4. Do you have a full slip? Maybe that would help with the sheer fabric... It's a great style for you, though, and the pink is so cute!

  5. LOVE the pink! Sure the wrinkles aren't ideal, but the dress is beautiful on you just the same. Especially paired with the leopard print jacket!! So classy :)

  6. I LOVE it!! Pink is fantastic and don't worry about the wrinkles. You did a terrific job, girl! I especially love the leopard jacket - :D

  7. I love it; you look so darn cute in it with the leopard jacket! :)

I'm still trying to get mine wrapped up - apparently making four muslins with eight sets of adjustments throws a wrench into one's schedule lol - but I am almost done!! ^__^

  8. There's an EASY fix to the facings showing - ACCENT THEM!!! I learned a LONG time ago that when there is a boo-boo, rather than try to hide it, accent it and make it the focal point. This can EASILY be done by top-stitching with a thicker thread and longer stitch length, then it will look decorative ;-)
As for the wrinkles, then it looks like linen and people seem to 'respect' linen. Again, learning experience ;-)

    1. That is a good idea, I may just have to do that. And it IS linen! You are good!

  9. It's definitely cute, and a great color/cut on you! Like Smitty said, accent the facings :) Or wear a slip, per Ginger. Or get really crazy and unpick/add underlining. Which would be nuts at this point!

It's sooo cute with the leopard print jacket!!! Linen wrinkles (I assume it's linen), so just go with it :)
